It is back to school time in the Tar Heel State! Fortunately for North Carolinians, we have easy access to beautiful sandy beaches and cool mountains. It is so nice for our students to take a well deserved break after working hard all year in school! In my household, we experienced final exams for the first time. As I quizzed my 6th grader about China, Ancient Rome, genetic mutations, creationism and much more that I had forgotten, I found myself very thankful that I have completed all exams! I will never forget turning in my last exam in graduate school and gleefully thinking, “After all these years, I am finally through with my formal education!” Our goal is for all RFB&D students to feel that same satisfacation and to reach their fullest potential. We know they are up for the challenge!

For some of our students, summer does not offer a full break. More than a few will attend summer school or have regular visits with a tutor. Many will have summer reading. For students with print disabilities, all of these challenges seem like rocky, steep mountains - almost impossible to climb. Fortunately, for our students, RFB&D is there! RFB&D unlocks the drudgery of summer reading for our members! In Bakersville, NC Camp Spring Creek is a camp for students with dyslexia. Campers at Spring Creek use RFB&D so their students can navigate through their summer reading. Students reported with joy that they read faster and enjoyed reading much more! In nearby Asheville, Key School students used RFB&D last summer for summer reading. Not only did their students understand the books at a deeper level, but RFB&D members from The Key School outscored their peers at their sister school!

Here is hoping that all teachers, administrators, tutors, parents and grandparents who support our North Carolina students might enjoy a well deserved summer break!

With the students in mind,
