Becoming a Reader
Orientation
Your first step to becoming a studio volunteer is
to attend an orientation. We generally hold these sessions every
Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Orientation lasts about
an hour, during which time you will tour the studio and also participate
in an actual 30-minute recording session. With the continuous
support of a studio staff member, you will have a fun, firsthand
experience of what we do and how we do it. To register for an
orientation, e-mail us at volboston@rfbd.org
or call 617-577-1111, ext. 17.

Following up on your orientation, your first
training will be a full, two-hour recording session, again
under the supervision of a studio staffperson. No prior
recording background is necessary. At the end of this session,
you will probably be ready to move on to becoming a certified,
self-directed RFB&D reader.

Becoming a Reader
|
You become a certified reader by successfully
recording a short demonstration disc. Our studio staff will
provide you with fun, virtually fail-safe training materials
to help you master the conventions of reading for individuals
with print disabilities. Once we have favorably reviewed
your demo, you can independently schedule your visits to
the studio according to our flexible schedule, which features
ample recording times both days and evenings. Every time
you volunteer, you select the two-hour session time that
suits you best. Ideally, we hope that you can give us two
hours per week, but we are flexible, and appreciate every
hour you can contribute.
View our
hours of operation. Note that the studio closes
on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. during the summer.
