Unit Recording for Blind & Dyslexic Celebrates
Dr. Seuss' 100th Birthday by Reading
at Dorchester's Trotter School
On Friday, March 5, 2004, students in Dorchester's
Trotter Elementary School joined millions of their peers across
the country to celebrate the joy of reading and the 100th birthday
of Dr. Seuss. This nationwide reading party is part of NEA's "Read
Across America," sponsored by the National Education Association
and many of America's leading literacy, youth, and civic groups.
Over
200 kindergarten and first graders were treated to a reading
of Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" by Kelly
Hill, (pictured) educational outreach coordinator for
the Boston Unit Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic.
Students received special prizes and birthday cupcakes. |

"All the research
shows that when children read outside of school, they do better
in school," says Christina Raimo, executive director
of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. "So from coast
to coast, teachers, celebrities, community members, and parents
are joining together to find ways to rekindle
our students' passion for reading. The activity at Trotter Elementary
School with students that have learning disabilities did just
that."
Recording for the
Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) is a national organization
that produces and distributes recorded textbooks to more than
117,000 students worldwide who have print disabilities, including
blindness, visual impairment, learning disabilities and other
physical disabilities that prevent the use of normal print.
RFB&D's central library contains over
99,000 titles spanning all age levels and subject areas. All books
are produced at RFB&D's 28 studios around the country, including
the one in Cambridge.
