Answers to Questions to
Frequently Asked Questions for RFB&D's Services
- Copyright
law prevents RFB&D from allowing usage by students who do
not have a documented print disability. Anyone with a documented
print disability, such as a learning disability, visual impairment
or other physical disability is eligible to become a registered
member with RFB&D®. To learn more about membership,
visit our membership page.
- You can
check RFB&D's online catalog
of audio books. Also, you may call the Boston outreach department
at (617) 577-1111, extension 12 or e-mail
jdougherty@rfbd.org.
- The Boston
Unit can take member requests if the book is deemed appropriate
for the master audiobook library. Keep in mind that RFB&D
records only entire books for the master audiobook library.
Schools must provide two copies of the books to be recorded.
The recording process takes a considerable amount of time; you
should estimate that a 150-page book would take at least three
months to complete. Contact the outreach department at (617)
577-1111, extension 12 for more information.
- That
is a very individual decision. Most schools, however, find that
it is wiser to keep the audio books and playback equipment at
the school at all times, but encourage individuals who use them
at home to enroll as individual RFB&D members. Teenagers
often find that their only free time for listening is at home,
so you may want to consider making audio books available on
a checkout basis.
- The more
parents know about this program the better, particularly if
students will be using audio books at home. RFB&D offers
informational literature that can be sent home with students
who are participating in an audio books program. RFB&D outreach
staff is also available to speak at parent groups.
- Regular education
teachers need to become familiar with audio books and equipment
so that they can instruct and support students in an inclusionary
setting as well. We recommend that all teachers attend a free
teacher training on the use of audio books, how to order audio
books, and how audio books benefit their students with print
disabilities.
- RFB&D
has a "Tools for Success" catalog that has an order
form in the back. Also you can visit RFB&D's
online catalog.
- RFB&D
has several models of CD players and software. For specific

Players and Accessories page or call the Boston Unit outreach coordinator at (617) 577-1111,
extension 12 or e-mail
jdougherty@rfbd.org.
