Kyle's Success Story

As parents who love to read and have always read to our two children, we found it hard to see our oldest son, Kyle, who has dyslexia, anxiety, ADHD and Asperger's syndrome, have such a difficult time understanding the written word.

Kyle always enjoyed being read to, but he avoided reading on his own because he said the words would "wiggle and shake across the page." As a result, school and homework were always a struggle for him, with lots of frustration, anger and stress impacting the entire household.
At the age of nine, Kyle's reading level was that of a kindergartener. He would stick to easy readers that were below his expected reading level and attempt to shirk his half-hour reading assignment each night. At the end of second grade, I found a tutor to assist with Kyle's reading. It was from his tutor that I learned about Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. I immediately e-mailed your local Venice, FL, office, just minutes away from Kyle's elementary school. The next day, I was at RFB&D® and shortly after brought home a CD player along with Kyle's first audiobook.

After discovering RFB&D audiobooks and now nearing the end of third grade, Kyle has a reading level equal to most students in his class! In addition, he was recognized by his teacher as being the only student to raise his Florida "Reading Counts" level over 275 points, or 2.75 grade levels, in one year. He recently passed the reading section of his Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) as well. This is a test measuring the academic ability of students from grade three to grade eleven. If not for his RFB&D membership, Kyle probably would still be fighting over his reading assignments and might even have been held back.

Thanks to RFB&D, reading is more enjoyable for Kyle. He now completes his assigned reading independently, sometimes reading more than what is required. As a family, we feel that the level of severe anxiety during reading time has disappeared. After all, the audiobooks have taken away Kyle's fear and frustration of reading and replaced it with the freedom to read and listen to books anytime he wants. He claims, "I love all the books I can now read by myself."

Sara Hanna and the wonderful staff at the Venice, FL, RFB&D office have been great, helping us with everything from a "hold" button mistake (I was sure we had broken it) to ordering new CDs. Because of their sincere dedication, we look forward to Kyle growing up with RFB&D by his side.

Thank you,
Kathleen (Kyle's mother)
