Can I use your books with the
profound and/or moderately disabled?
There are three groups of individuals that qualify for using
RFB&D'S recorded books: individuals with learning disabilities
(and all that come under that big umbrella), individuals with
Blind/Visual Impairments, and individuals with Orthopedic
Impairments.
What is the difference between
books on cassettes and books on CDs?
CDs are much easier to navigate.
Books recorded digitally can be on one or two CDs whereas
they could require 15-20 cassettes.
Dedicated playback machines or computers can be used to
play CD; cassettes can be played only dedicated playback
machines.
Can I use a regular CD player
with your books?
Our audiobooks require a special playback machine or software
program.
What kind of books (novels, textbooks,
dictionaries, etc) do you have?
We have 104,000+ books in our master library and 31 studios
across the country are reading additional books each day.
The library contains most major textbooks used in our nation's
schools, as well as the most popular novels and classics.
We do not read reference books.
What happens if you do not have
a book I need?
You may request that we read the book that you need. You
would send us 2 copies of the books (to be returned if you
wish); after headquarters approves, the studio will begin
marking and reading the books, a process that takes about
3 months. Plan ahead in order to get your books on time.
Whom do I contact to help me get
books?
To order books, set up your on-line account or call 1-800-221-4792.
Check on line to see if we have a book you need. Copy the
shelf number to use when ordering. (www.rfbd.org,
open catalog, search for book, give just enough information
to locate the book).
How many books can I get with
my membership?
This depends on the level of membership. (Refer to question
2 above)
Is there any proof (research)
to show that using audio books helps the learning disabled?
Yes, look at the Johns Hopkins Study found on RFB&D's website.
How do I fund the program? Is
there any help out there?
RFB&D's services qualify for assistive technology monies.
You may also use your Federal funding for Special Education
as well as Title funding.
Your local Lions Club is a great source of assistance; contact
the local president; he/she may be able to offer assistance.
Try other civic organizations in your community; they often
are very willing to help the schools. Look for special grants
relating to technology or reading to fund the program.
