NONPROFIT RECEIVES $90,000 GRANT FROM WEINGART FOUNDATION

Support for Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic-LA's Adopt-a-District Program

Los Angeles, California, November 20, 2006 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -
Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic-Los Angeles (RFB&D-LA) is proud to announce that they have received a $90,000 grant over two years from the Weingart Foundation to support RFB&D-LA's Adopt-a-District Program. This program is a new educational outreach initiative designed to introduce underserved school districts to audio textbooks for students with learning disabilities or vision impairments. Ten schools will be "adopted" as a result of the grant, within the districts of Montebello, Pasadena, Inglewood, LAUSD Charter Schools, and Fillmore.

The grant will be used to underwrite the fees for RFB&D school memberships for two years for each of the ten schools, provide custom recording of required textbooks, purchase specialized CD players with headsets, provide instructional training, and open house events. Each school will also receive 70 hours of on-site support, along with ongoing member services support.

The Weingart Foundation focuses its grant making on programs that address the needs of the underserved and the general community. It supports a variety of health, education, arts & culture, and human services programs in Southern California, and is one of the major private foundations in the United States.

RFB&D-LA serves approximately 2,900 students of all ages with print disabilities in
Los Angeles and Ventura counties. With more than 109,000 titles in their national library in Princeton, New Jersey, RFB&D is the number one producer in the world of audio textbooks for people who can't effectively read standard print. For more information, call Melissa MacRae, Development Director, at (323) 664-5525 x105 and visit www.rfbd.org/LA.
