Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® Los Angeles Unit RFB&D®-LA

Become a Volunteer

RFB&D-LA has multiple opportunities for volunteers in Audio Textbook Production, Educational Outreach, Fund Raising and General Administration.

Audio Textbook Production

Photo of Volunteer readingRecording for the Blind & Dyslexic is a unique nonprofit organization in that all textbooks are recorded by volunteers. For 60 years, we have recorded textbooks for students from kindergarten through post-graduate levels. Besides reading the actual text, readers describe the accompanying graphs, charts and illustrations. All volunteers are asked to make a two-hour commitment per week and a typical volunteer puts in six weeks of training before flying solo as a reader. There are three recording studios in the Los Angeles area, located in Hollywood, Redondo Beach, Reseda along with recording studios in Upland and Santa Ana. We offer day, evening and weekend hours to accommodate all schedules, though session times vary between studios.

While we're always looking for volunteers to read in all subject areas, we are always in need of individuals with expertise in math, chemistry, science, computers, accounting, and economics.

There are also volunteer opportunities in RFB&D's other departments:

Educational Outreach

Educational Outreach opportunities include working at conferences, internet research, and administrative work like preparing packets for conferences.

Fund Raising

Fund Raising opportunities range from hosting or chairing home parties, becoming a Table Captain at fund raising events, greeting or registering people at events, and doing office work.

General Administration

General Administration opportunities include help with event mailings, event preparations, copying, filing and general projects.

Please e-mail Rob Young at volunteers@rfbdla.org or call him at (323)664-5525 x111 if you're interested in volunteering in any capacity.
