Volunteer Opportunities at the Unit

Recording Volunteers — The Philadelphia Unit is always in need of volunteers to get the textbooks recorded and to the students who are waiting for them. If you enjoy reading aloud, please consider joining our dedicated volunteers. They are a wonderful group of people of various ages, education, backgrounds and experiences.

They are eager to share their love of learning and to create educational opportunities for those who cannot read standard print.

We have an ongoing need for readers and directors who can read general humanities textbooks and a critical need for readers with specific backgrounds in various subjects such as science, law, math, medicine and technology.

All volunteers are trained in our digital recording studio in King of Prussia. No prior recording experience is necessary.

To meet the growing needs of our members, we need your help. We are particularly in need of volunteers who can work with us for two hours a week in the late afternoon and evening Monday through Thursday.

Studio hours are:

Monday through Thursday — 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday —9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday — 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

What kind of volunteer jobs can I do?

Bookmarkers

Create a penciled path through the textbook before it is recorded. The reader is later guided by these marks through the sequence of charts, illustrations, and footnotes that must all be described or read.

Directors

Guide the reading sessions. They operate the recording equipment and make corrections to ensure that each recording meets RFB&D's high quality standards. All studio volunteers must have director training.

Readers

Read text aloud and describe charts, graphs, maps and other illustrations in textbooks. We need readers in all subject areas and have a critical need for readers in technical and scientific areas. Readers must take a general and/or specialty audition.

Checkers

Review recordings for sound quality and proper adherence to conventions regarding chapter, page, and illustration/chart designations.

Educational Outreach Volunteers

Travel to schools and education centers to demonstrate to students and teachers how to most effectively use our special four track tapes/compact disks and tape players/CD players.

Promotion/Fundraising

Help raise money and create public awareness for our local unit through specials events, presentations in our local community and writing newsletters.

Office Assistants

Data entry, filing, mailing preparation and assemble volunteer and student/school information packets.
