As 2008 ended at a breathtaking speed, we are looking ahead to build upon the advances made this year for our Virginia students. Earlier this year the Virginia Department of Education agreed to make RFB&D services available to all K-12 students with print disabilities in the Commonwealth**. This initiative offers audio books to students through a new statewide library called AIM-VA, a major step that will level the playing field for all Virginia students who struggle with a print disability.
This momentous contract with the Department of Education along with the launch of RFB&Ds new audio access prod¬uct which facilitates a download of our textbooks to an MP3 device are two powerful new tools for our students. While the AIM-VA contract provides RFB&D membership services for Virginia schools and students, there is still an urgent need to locate funding to purchase equipment for hundreds of schools.
2008 was also a time to lay groundwork for several regional initiatives that will continue to move ahead as the calendar changes. These new initiatives are focused in Southwest and Southside Virginia, target work force development and hold great promise. My goal is to leverage what we learn and bring these new strategies to every community in the Commonwealth. We will further expand our awareness building with a brand new sporting clay event to be held in April of 2009 in Buffalo Gap and enjoy once again the beautiful mountain views at Stoney Creek Golf Course for our annual golf event.
As I reflect on this unique year, I am gratified to be surrounded by so many
generous volunteers, board members, donors and fellow staff members who work
seemingly endlessly to help us be the best we can be for our students. Our
team is mighty and I am thankful every day for all of you.
Sincerely,

Gail Milligan
