Volunteer

There are many ways to volunteer for RFB&D in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennesee, Virginia and West Virginia. Whatever your interests are, if you will share your time with us we would love to have you!

Studio Volunteer in Charlottesville, VA

Orientation
The first step to becoming a studio volunteer is to schedule an appointment for orientation and training. The orientation training class will last approximately 90 minutes and will introduce you to our mission, our methods, and provide a brief hands-on recording experience. To register for an orientation, contact:
Charlottesville, VA Studio: Marcia Rosen-House at 434-326-4956 or mrosen-house@rfbd.org
Oak Ridge, TN Studio: CC Morris at 865-482-3496 or cmorris@rfbd.org

Training
As a new volunteer, you first learn the computer-based process of digital audio recording through observation, hands-on directing, and checking recordings as part of our quality control. We strongly suggest that you complete your training within as short a time as possible to maintain momentum while you are learning. No prior recording background is necessary.

Becoming a Reader
Once you have learned how to operate the recording equipment and become familiar with our conventions, you may choose to audition as a reader. Upon your request, our studio staff will provide you with materials to help you master the conventions of reading for people with print disabilities. Once our staff has favorably reviewed your recording, you can be put on the studio schedule to become a regular volunteer reader.
