JOB DESCRIPTION

Development Director

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To generate financial support for the programs, operations and operating "reserve" for the Santa Barbara Unit of RFB&D through a comprehensive program of solicitations to individuals, community organizations, foundations, businesses and corporations; and through the development and implementation of new funding initiatives (e.g. planned giving, Benevon).

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop, implement and manage short and longer term fundraising plans under the general direction of the Executive Director. Plans will include strategies and objectives to reach yearly funding goals and a budget for managing all aspects of the Unit's fundraising program as appropriate to the Unit territories (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Kern Counties).

  2. Conduct cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for current donors (individuals, community organizations, foundations, businesses and corporations), including telephoning, visiting, organizing special social events and writing proposals, reports, and other correspondence.

  3. Identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors (individuals, community organizations, foundations, businesses and corporations) including researching, developing strategies, telephoning, visiting, organizing special social events and writing proposals and other correspondence.

  4. Work with Executive Director, Board of Directors, Board Fundraising & Events Committee, Honorary Advisory Committee and volunteers to develop new contacts and programs for revenue generation. Works with Executive Director, Board Chairman, Board Fundraising & Events Committee Chair and Honorary Advisory Committee Co-Chairs to research and recommend potential Board and Committee members.

  5. Develops and directs annual "appeal" campaign (2-3 per year), fundraising activities for annual Record-A-Thon; produces Learning Through Listening annual luncheon and monthly orientation sessions.

  6. Identify and recommend new sources of funding, including events, sponsorship opportunities, and other programs; works with ED, Board members, Fundraising Committee and others to develop new sources of funding.

  7. Oversees the work of development consultants and the Development Associate for the Unit.

  8. Oversees and works with Executive Director, Board, staff and volunteers in publication of semi-annual Newsletter.

  9. Work with headquarters' financial development department staff on appropriate unit/headquarters joint solicitation and other development matters.

  10. Provide backup support for gift record-keeping and acknowledgement in absence of office administrator and development associate; build donor database; update and purge as needed.

  11. Represent unit at local and national fundraising meetings.

  12. Perform special assignments at request of Executive Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for a seasoned veteran with 3 or more years of experience in a professional fundraising and development environment or related field (e.g. marketing, sales); computer literacy including donor database management (preferably Raiser's Edge). Excellent oral and written skills, outgoing, creative, resourceful, self-starter with ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Strong organizational, management and people skills are essential. Must have car and be able to visit current and potential donors. Professional appearance and demeanor necessary. Familiarity with philanthropic community of Tri-Counties, event production, donor software, and passion for our mission is a plus. Salary: Competitive with excellent benefits.

Outreach Coordinator, Santa Barbara unit
Part-time, Exempt Position

REPORTS TO: Educational Outreach Director

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To coordinate and expand RFB&D educational outreach program in San Luis Obispo County, Northern Santa Barbara County and occasionally Kern County. Conduct activities to build awareness of RFB&D services and increase utilization of these services.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Increase utilization of RFB&D services through a comprehensive program of outreach to public and private schools and other educational and professional institutions. Increase utilization to individual users of RFB&D services. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on activities designed to achieve goals.

    Performance objectives include recruiting new individuals and recruiting new schools as members; retaining individuals and current school members during each fiscal year.

  2. Assist local schools and students with inquiries regarding services; serve as local customer service representative for schools; and provide school-based training to teachers on RFB&D's specialized playback equipment and software. Conduct informal evaluation of schools.

    Performance objectives include serving local consumers and responding to local issues in a timely manner.

  3. Increase RFB&D's visibility in the professional educational community at conferences and seminars, in publications, meetings and other appropriate venues. Provide staff support and coordination for volunteer speakers.

  4. Performance objectives include contacting organizations and representing RFB&D at a minimum of one function per month.

    Assist the Educational Outreach Director in creating an annual operating plan for outreach.

  5. Assist in providing school information and program results in preparation of grant applications and reports

  6. Work with special advisory committees of volunteer community members in developing goals, objectives, tasks and timelines as it pertains to educational outreach in the Coordinator's coverage area. Cultivate new members for the advisory committee.

    Performance objectives include recruiting advisory committee members under the guidance of the Executive Director, attending and participating in all meetings of the advisory committee, and assisting with special events or speaking engagements.

  7. Work effectively as a Team Member as part of the Santa Barbara Unit staff and maintain confidential integrity of the position.

  8. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

College degree, preferably in general or special education. Experience working with teachers, students, parents and school administrators. Familiarity with classroom settings preferred. Marketing and sales experience preferred. Excellent communication, presentation, organization and computer skills required. Travel required. Reliable transportation needed. Bilingual preferred.

OTHER:

This is a part-time, 24-hours per week position, no benefits. Competitive hourly wage; reimbursable expenses including mileage. Coordinator is expected to work out of a home office (preferably equipped with computer, telephone, printer and fax), unless other arrangements are made, in San Luis Obispo County.
