Volunteers Help Blind Students Enjoy Reading

Participants at RFB&D Southern California Read Across America eventTwenty volunteers came together on Tuesday to record audio books that help people who are visually impaired or suffer from dyslexia to experience the joy of reading. The effort was part of the national Read Across America Day, and was held by the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, Southern California.

American Volunteerism At Its Best With RFB&D

photo of volunteers recording an audio textbook at RFB&DRecording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D, www.rfbd.org) has one mission: to provide audio textbooks to print-impaired students at every level, from grade school to grad school. This non-profit organization relies entirely on volunteers like me1 to convert the printed page into audio recordings. The organization serves over 200,000 student members across the U.S., and circulated over half a million audio books in 2008 – while adding nearly 7,000 titles to the list available in that year.

For dyslexic and blind, sounds help replace sight

Studio for blind earns a reprieve

WILLIAMSTOWN – Three months of work by a group of volunteers with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic paid off recently with the opening of a satellite studio in a classroom at St. John's Episcopal Church on Park Street.
