DYSLEXIA: READING,
RECORDINGS AND RESOURCES SYMPOSIUM ON MARCH 27
DESIGNED TO HELP PARENTS AND TEACHERS OF STUDENTS WITH LEARNING
DISABILITIES
PRINCETON, NJ (March 6,
2003) - A symposium titled "Dyslexia: Reading,
Recordings and Resources," scheduled for Thursday, March
27, from 7 to 9 PM, will show parents and teachers of students
with learning disabilities ways that they can help their children
learn and succeed in school.
According to
the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), more than 15% of
children in our schools today have dyslexia, a learning disability
that makes processing the written word difficult or impossible.
Three New Jersey
nonprofit organizations are sponsors of this event: The National
Headquarters of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® (RFB&D®),
the New Jersey Unit of RFB&D and the New Jersey Branch of
the IDA. The symposium will take place at RFB&D's National
Headquarters, 20 Roszel Road, Princeton, NJ. The registration
fee, which will help offset the cost of the event, is $20.
The evening
will begin with a panel discussion featuring:
George Renwick,
Renwick Associates, an educational consultant and former director
of pupil services, will speak about the process of identifying
a child's learning disability and working with the school system.
Dawn Holubiak,
North Brunswick, and her teenage daughter, Tanya, who has dyslexia,
will share their experiences, from the process of identifying
a child's learning disability to securing helpful accommodations
and resources.
Dr. Gordon Sherman,
Newgrange School, Hamilton, NJ, and a NJ Branch IDA board member,
will talk about the resources that the IDA offers to students
with dyslexia.
Peter
Smith and Karen LeMorvan, RFB&D, will explain RFB&D's
mission and the services it provides to people who cannot effectively
read standard print. They will also demonstrate RFB&D's digitally
recorded textbooks on CD.
A question-and-answer
period will follow.
This symposium
will be repeated from 7 to 9 PM on Tuesday, May 13, at Fairleigh
Dickinson University, College at Florham, Lenfield Hall, 285 Madison
Avenue, Madison, NJ.
Journalists
with credentials may call Morgan Roth at 609-520-8095 to
attend the symposium or to arrange interviews with panelists.
