KENTUCKY UNIT OF RECORDING FOR THE BLIND &
DYSLEXIC® (RFB&D®) ANNOUNCES PATRICK HENRY HUGHES
AND PATRICK JOHN HUGHES AS HONORARY CO-CHAIRMEN OF 2008 RACE TO
RECORD
February 20, 2008 (Louisville, KY) - The
Kentucky Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® (RFB&D®),
the nation's educational library for students of all ages who
cannot effectively read standard print because of visual impairment,
dyslexia or other physical disabilities, proudly announced today
that Patrick Henry Hughes and his father, Patrick John Hughes,
will serve as the Honorary Co-Chairmen of the unit's 2008 Race
To Record.
Race to Record is the RFB&D-Kentucky Unit's
annual drive to recruit more volunteers, record new textbooks
and raise funds to provide students with print disabilities with
the recorded textbooks they need to succeed academically.
"Each year we are impressed with the outpouring of support
we receive from the community, and this year we are doubly excited
to have one of our long time members leading the effort. Patrick
Henry and Patrick John have been great supporters for years, and
we are especially honored by their agreeing to be our honorary
co-chairmen for this year's Race To Record," said Tom Strohmeier
Vice-Chairman of RFB&D's Kentucky Unit Board of Directors.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers and staff
I want thank the Hughes for their support and their commitment
to RFB&D."
"Our goal this year is to exceed our past levels of new
volunteers, new titles recorded and contributions raised to support
the operations and outreach of the Kentucky Unit," said Sarah
Trester, Executive Director of the Kentucky Unit of RFB&D.
"We serve more than 2,800 individuals with print disabilities
in the Kentuckiana region, and strive to reach and serve more
students with print disabilities each year. The tremendous support
we receive through our Race To Record helps us meet those challenges."
The Hughes family was recently featured on ABC's hit reality TV
show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (17 Feb 2008). Born blind
and with a condition that prevents him from straightening his
arms and legs, the younger Patrick is a longtime RFB&D member,
and has used RFB&D's digitally recorded audiobooks to help
him achieve educational success in the past and today at the University
of Louisville.
RFB&D serves more than 185,000 individuals nationwide, and
more than 2,800 in the Kentuckiana region, from kindergarten through
graduate school and beyond with its one-of-a-kind audiobook library
of educational titles. RFB&D's AudioPlus® digitally recorded
textbooks on CD provide unprecedented navigation, ease of use
and proven effectiveness as learning tools for students with print
disabilities like dyslexia. Students rely on RFB&D's unique
accommodation to access the printed page and to achieve educational
success. All of RFB&D's accessible titles are recorded by
volunteers working in 29 RFB&D recording studios nationwide,
including Louisville, KY.
