Become a Volunteer

We are now accepting new studio volunteers

Volunteers, using computers at the NJ Unit, help to produce books in accessible digital format on CD and downloadable audio textbooks. These books offer students greater ability to search for and retrieve information quickly and easily. We are seeking detail-oriented volunteers who have two hours a week to give to join our dedicated corps of studio volunteers. Volunteer opportunities in the studio are varied and include:

Readers narrate the text of a book and describe any visual elements, such as charts, graphs, pictures, maps, or mathematical equations. Currently, RFB&D is facing a shortage of specialized readers proficient in math, computers, economics, accounting, chemistry, medical/nursing, and other technical areas.

Karen Frezz, an NJ Unit Volunteer sitting at a computerDirectors guide the reader by operating easy-to-use recording equipment and making corrections to the recorded material when needed

Checkers review files during the production process to ensure that RFB&D’s high quality standards are being met. Book Markers create a “pencil path” through books to be recorded, making notes to guide readers through the sequence of text, charts, illustrations and footnotes

A Note to Volunteers: A commitment of two hours a week for at least one year is required. Volunteers at the unit must be computer proficient. Training on digital audio equipment is provided. Get a behind the scenes look at the NJ Unit helping students in a Trenton classroom.
